What Happened
OpenAI confirmed that Sora, its AI video generator, is shutting down. The app closes on April 26, 2026. The API follows on September 24, 2026.
Sora launched to massive hype in September 2025, hitting number one in the App Store within 24 hours. But behind the scenes, it was burning an estimated $15 million per day in compute costs against total lifetime revenue of just $2.1 million. The Disney partnership, worth $1 billion, collapsed when Disney found out about the shutdown less than an hour before the public announcement.
Why It Died
Three reasons. First, the economics didn't work. Video generation is insanely expensive in GPU compute, and OpenAI is preparing for an IPO. Second, unresolved copyright issues. The platform was generating videos featuring copyrighted characters, and the legal exposure was mounting. Third, strategic pivot. OpenAI is refocusing on enterprise tools, coding, and reasoning models where the revenue is more predictable.
What to Use Instead
Runway Gen-4: The most mature option. Professional-grade editing tools, real-time generation in research preview. Best for creative professionals. Kling 3.0: Strong on realism and now supports 4K at 120 seconds. Free tier available. Google Veo 3: Integrated with Google's ecosystem. Native audio generation. Luma Dream Machine (Ray 3): Best-in-class physics simulation. Lighting, materials, and atmospheric effects are exceptional.
What This Means for Businesses
If you were using Sora for marketing videos, product demos, or content creation, don't panic. The AI video space is healthy and competitive. Export your Sora library now (before April 26), pick one of the alternatives above, and rebuild your workflow.
The bigger lesson: don't build critical business processes on a single AI platform. The landscape moves fast. Build workflows that are model-agnostic where possible.
