GPT-5.5 Just Dropped: Everything You Need to Know

OpenAI released GPT-5.5 on April 24, 2026. Here's what changed, what it means for your business, and whether you should switch.

What Just Happened

OpenAI released GPT-5.5, codenamed "Spud," just six weeks after GPT-5.4. This is the fastest turnaround between major models we've ever seen. The AI race is no longer a marathon. It's a sprint.

What's Different

GPT-5.5 is built for agentic work. Instead of carefully managing every step, you can hand it a messy, multi-part task and it will plan, use tools, check its work, and keep going until the job is done. OpenAI's president called it "a new class of intelligence."

The improvements are strongest in coding, computer use, data analysis, and knowledge work. Teams with early access reported saving up to 10 hours per week on work that previously required careful step-by-step prompting.

The Numbers

GPT-5.5 matches GPT-5.4 on speed while being significantly more capable. It uses fewer tokens to achieve the same results, which means lower API costs despite the higher per-token price ($5 per million input, $30 per million output). The 1M token context window means it can work with massive documents and codebases.

Who Gets It

Rolling out now to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex. GPT-5.5 Pro (extended reasoning) is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise. API access is coming soon, pending additional cybersecurity safeguards.

How It Compares to Claude Opus 4.7

Both models are excellent but optimised for different things. Claude Opus 4.7 leads on reasoning precision, legal analysis (90.9% on BigLaw Bench), and vision accuracy. GPT-5.5 leads on agentic workflows, computer use, and handling ambiguous tasks. For most business automation, either model will serve you well. The choice depends on your specific workflow.

What This Means for Your Business

If you're building AI-powered systems, GPT-5.5's agentic capabilities make complex automation more accessible. The model can handle multi-step workflows that previously required custom orchestration. If you're using ChatGPT for daily work, the upgrade is automatic and you'll notice better results with less prompting effort.
