The Headline Numbers
Claude Opus 4.7 launched on April 16, 2026 and it's a serious upgrade. Vision resolution tripled (2,576px, roughly 3.75 megapixels). Coding benchmarks jumped from 58% to 70% on CursorBench. Legal reasoning hit 90.9% on BigLaw Bench. And there's a new "xhigh" effort level sitting between high and max.
Same price as Opus 4.6. That matters.
What Actually Changed
The big moves are in three areas. First, vision. Opus 4.7 can now read documents, screenshots, and images with dramatically better accuracy. If you're processing invoices, contracts, or product images, this is a step change. Second, coding. The model resolves 3x more production-level tasks than its predecessor. If you're building with Claude Code, this is your upgrade signal. Third, reasoning. The new xhigh effort level gives you finer control over how hard the model thinks. Low effort for quick tasks, xhigh for complex analysis, max when accuracy is everything.
How to Use It for Business
Document processing: Feed it contracts, reports, or data sheets. The improved vision means it reads messy PDFs and handwritten notes far better than before. Code generation: Build internal tools, dashboards, and automations faster. The coding improvements are not incremental. They're material. Analysis: Use xhigh effort for financial modelling, competitive analysis, or any task where getting the details right matters.
Should You Switch from Opus 4.6?
If you're on the API, check the migration guide first. There are breaking changes. If you're using Claude through the web interface, you're already on 4.7.
For most business use cases, the upgrade is worth it. Better accuracy, better vision, same price. The only reason to stay on 4.6 is if you have production code that depends on the old tokenizer.
What This Means for the Market
Claude is pulling ahead on reasoning and coding tasks. GPT-5.2 is still competitive on general knowledge, but for business workflows that involve reading documents, writing code, and making decisions, Opus 4.7 is the strongest model available right now.
