What Is Cowork?
Claude Cowork is Claude Code's autonomous capabilities wrapped in a visual interface. You don't touch a terminal. You give Claude a complex, multi-step task, and it plans, executes, and delivers finished work.
It's now generally available on macOS and Windows through the Claude Desktop app.
Why It Matters
Before Cowork, getting Claude to do autonomous work required technical setup, command-line tools, and developer knowledge. Cowork removes that barrier. It made agentic AI accessible to everyone, not just developers.
What Can You Do With It?
Give Cowork a task like "Research our top 10 competitors, create a comparison matrix, and draft a strategy document with recommendations." It will plan the research, gather information, organise it, and produce the deliverable. All while you do something else.
Other examples: "Analyse this spreadsheet of customer data and identify the top 3 segments by lifetime value." Or "Read these 5 contracts and create a summary table of key terms, renewal dates, and pricing."
Skills and Plugins
Cowork supports skills (reusable instructions for specific tasks) and plugins (connections to external tools like Slack, Jira, Google Drive). You can set up a skill for "weekly team report" that pulls data from your connected tools and generates a formatted document every Friday.
Team Features
For Team and Enterprise plans, admins can organise users into groups, assign custom roles, and control which capabilities each group can access. Usage analytics show how your team is using Cowork and where it's delivering the most value.
Getting Started
Download the Claude Desktop app. Open Cowork. Start with a task you'd normally spend 30-60 minutes on. Let it run. Review the output. Iterate from there.
